Workshop dedicated to multi-color Risograph design and printing
The central focus of the workshop will be color separation: the process of translating a color image into a limited number of layers, one per color. This is a often overlooked process common to all printing techniques. When carried out by hand, it becomes a creative exercise that requires interpretation and the ability to select and prioritise visual information. Each color separation produced from the same image represents a possible variation of the original: assembled in sequence, these variations give rise to striking animations.
As a preliminary activity, the workshop includes a collective color separation exercise using colored carbon paper sheets. Participants will then work on the layers directly in black, using different graphic techniques. This makes the entire process fully analogue, since the drawings can be fed directly into the Risograph printer without passing through a computer.
The most interesting results emerge when several people work from the same image: by overprinting the color layers of different participants, the possible combinations multiply leading to unexpected outcomes. The final work can be collected into a booklet and/or transformed into an animation.
Studio òbelo (÷) is a graphic design practice founded by Claude Marzotto and Maia Sambonet, specializing in work for publishing, art, and culture. Through their practice they experiment also with printing processes such as Risograph. Alongside professional practice, they are actively involved in teaching and workshops at several design schools.
