Scholar and curator Christine Eyene serves as guest editor for this special issue, featuring a central section dedicated to the work and place of women—particularly Lubaina Himid—within the Black Arts Movement. She decided to retrace histories of the past forty years as a way to collectively remember that it takes time and long-durational energies for radical shifts to occur, and for experiences to travel across generations and constellations. This tidalectic, ceaseless, and powerful movement touches upon multiple shorelines. Hence, many references are woven across this issue, emerging on the occasion of the 61st Venice Biennale, some of whose participating (and censored) artists will be met here, too.
